How to choose a GPU for Blender
“Best” splits in two: does the scene fit, and how long does a comparable frozen scene take. Those are different questions. Mixing them produces shopping-list folklore.
The problem
A faster card that cannot hold the BVH still fails. A high-VRAM card that is busy or on a slower backend can still take longer on a small scene. Rankings that ignore VRAM, backend, and scene identity are not evidence.
Cause
- VRAM decides whether Cycles can run at all. See VRAM limits.
- Runtime on a frozen scene is comparable only when the scene, engine, and verification status match.
- CUDA and OptiX are not interchangeable scores. An OptiX PASS is not a CUDA PASS.

The 3090 and 3080 rows were measured in different environments. Do not subtract 4.08 from 75.74 and call that “how much faster a 3090 is for every Blender file.” Read how to read the 3090 result, the FARPY GPU registry, and BenchMork compare.
Practical fixes
- If the current card crashes, fit first. Speed comparisons are wasted on a scene that does not load.
- If the scene fits and is slow, time one frame and use the calculator.
- If you need frames without buying hardware, that is execution: render farm notes.
